Rationale
If you are being searched by the authorities, it is possible that they may coerce you to reveal your PIN codes and passphrases. We can add an extra line of defence. We can hide our documents, files, and photos so they don't show up when the authorities use your phone in a typical way.
Instructions
What you should prepare
- Your phone needs to be plugged in and have at least 80% *
What you should do
Depending on which option you decided best fits you, you will follow ONE of the following steps:
1. Ensure your storage is encrypted
Encryption stores your data in a form that can be read only when your phone or tablet is unlocked. Unlocking your encrypted device decrypts your data. Encryption can add protection in case your device is stolen.
On 🤖 ANDROID, confirm with the 📱 Android - Enable Full-device Encryption instructions.
On 🍏 iOS, your storage will be encrypted.
2. Setup an Encrypted Vault
Follow the instructions to 📱 Android - Setup File Vault on 🤖 ANDROID, or 📱 iOS - Setup File Vault on 🍏 iOS.
3. Selective Cloud Sync [👩💻]
advanced only
- it is OK to skip it if you are not sure what to do.
In most cases in Myanmar, the risk of losing data through cloud sync is unlikely to be your top priority - so this step is optional. If you want to, you can review the "sync" settings for the apps you have installed on your phone.
In settings search for "Sync" and you should be shown the sync options.
What should you do? Consider that if your data is stored in multiple places, it needs to be protect in all those places. So considering whether to use cloud sync for an app depends on how much you trust that the service is offering good security. There is also a trade-off to consider between using the cloud sync feature as a means of backing up your data.
This is for advanced users only, so only proceed if you understand the trade-offs
4. Reduce the Amount of Data on Your Phone
The best way to protect your data ... is not to have any! Of course that's not always practicable advice, but how could you get closer to this ideal?
By Only carrying with you what you really need to have on your phone, and Archive or delete everything else.
- So the first step would be to 💻-🖥️-📱 Archive or Destroy Your Data.
- Once you've archived your files, delete the archived files from your device.
You will know that you are successful when the photos, documents and emails are no longer directly accessible from your phone.
